1. The First Settlers

   The Abruzzo area comprises four provinces — L’Aquila, Pescara, Teramo and Chieti. History tells us that the first settlers in this region were the Picenians, a people of skilled farmers and fishermen.

   Even though the region is very sparsely populated, Abruzzo boasts three state-of-the-art universities to serve the educational needs of its community: the University of L’Aquila, the University G. d’Annunzio of Chieti and Pescara, and the University of Teramo.

3. You Will Never Guess Who Founded This Town

   L’Aquila has always been cherished for its historical value. The town was founded by Emperor Frederick II himself, who was responsible for helping it flourish in the first place. It was destroyed in 1259 — but brought back to life by Charles I, King of Sicily.

   

4. A Champion Rugby Team

   The area is home to the L’Aquila rugby team — needless to say, the people of this region love their sport. The team is a five-time champion of the Italian championship.

   The culture and history of the place are vividly reflected in its many festivals. There is the traditional horse race in Lanciano, the medieval pageant festival, and many other such festivities that attract the interest of tourists and locals alike.
